Ghazal 396: It is morning, cupbearer: fill a cup with wine.

It is morning, cupbearer: fill a cup with wine.
The turning of the sky does not wait: make haste.

Before this passing world falls into ruin,
ruin us with a cup of rose-red wine.

The sun of wine has risen from the east of the goblet;
if you are looking for the means of pleasure, give up sleep.

On the day when the wheel makes jugs out of our clay,
take care to fill the bowl of our skull with wine.

We are not the men for asceticism, repentance and idle talk;
speak to us with a cup of clear wine.

The right work is the worship of wine, Hafez;
rise, and set your mind firmly on the right work.

Interpretation of the fal

It is morning and time does not stand still: wake up and do not put things off. Life is short and the world unstable, so live gladly before the chance is gone. Keep away from dryness and pretension, and be honest with yourself. Make up your mind firmly and act on what your heart knows to be right.
